Mount Oldoinyo Lengai Climbing Routes

Mount Oldoinyo Lengai (2,962 m / 9,718 ft), meaning "Mountain of God" in the Maasai language, is Tanzania's only active volcano and one of the world's most unique volcanic mountains. Located near Lake Natron in the eastern Great Rift Valley, Oldoinyo Lengai is famous for its rare carbonatite lava, steep volcanic slopes, and unforgettable sunrise views across northern Tanzania. The mountain attracts hikers, photographers, geologists, and adventure travellers seeking one of Africa's most challenging overnight climbs.

Unlike Mount Kilimanjaro, Oldoinyo Lengai has one main established climbing route beginning from the southern side of the mountain near Lake Natron. Most treks start around midnight, allowing climbers to avoid the intense daytime heat and reach the summit at sunrise. Although the climb is relatively short, its steep gradients, loose volcanic ash, and rugged terrain make it one of Tanzania's most physically demanding mountain adventures.
