Mount Meru Trekking

Climb Mount Meru – Tanzania's Most Scenic Volcano

Discover the beauty of Mount Meru (4,566 m), Tanzania's second-highest mountain and one of Africa's most rewarding trekking destinations. Located in Arusha National Park, the climb combines wildlife safaris, lush rainforest, volcanic craters, alpine landscapes, and breathtaking sunrise views over Mount Kilimanjaro. Whether you're preparing for Kilimanjaro or looking for an unforgettable standalone adventure, Mount Meru offers an exceptional trekking experience with fewer crowds and spectacular scenery.

  • Best climbing seasons are January–March and June–October, offering clear skies and excellent trail conditions.
  • All climbs include experienced mountain guides, a mandatory armed park ranger, mountain hut accommodation, and full safety support.
  • Summit Socialist Peak (4,566 m) via the scenic Momella Route with incredible crater views and unforgettable Kilimanjaro sunrises.

Best Time to Climb Mount Meru

The best months for trekking are June to October and January to March, when the weather is dry, visibility is excellent, and summit conditions are ideal. November remains climbable with occasional showers, while April and May experience heavy rainfall and slippery trails.

What to Expect on the Trek

Trek through wildlife-rich forests with a mandatory armed ranger, spend nights in comfortable mountain huts, and tackle an exciting midnight summit ascent along narrow volcanic ridges. Expect encounters with giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, and breathtaking views of Meru Crater and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Preparation & Safety

Although shorter than Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is steeper and requires good fitness. We recommend 6–8 weeks of hiking preparation, hill training, and strengthening exercises. Our certified guides, porters, and armed park rangers ensure a safe, well-paced, and rewarding climb from start to summit.

Mount Meru Trekking Route

Rising to 4,566 metres (14,980 ft), Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest mountain and one of East Africa's most rewarding trekking destinations. Located within Arusha National Park, Mount Meru offers spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Often used as an acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is also an incredible adventure in its own right.

Unlike Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru has one official trekking route—the Momella Route. Every climb is accompanied by an armed park ranger, allowing trekkers to safely pass through areas inhabited by giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, warthogs, monkeys, and numerous bird species before ascending into alpine moorland and along the spectacular crater rim to Socialist Peak.
